What Is a Pilot Car?

A pilot car (also called an escort vehicle) is a vehicle that accompanies oversize or overweight loads to warn other motorists and help the load navigate safely through traffic, narrow roads, and obstacles. Most states require pilot cars when a load exceeds certain width, height, length, or weight thresholds.

Why Do Regulations Vary by State?

Each state's Department of Transportation sets its own rules for oversize load escorts based on road infrastructure, traffic patterns, and safety considerations. A load that requires no escort in one state may require two escorts in the next. That's why it's critical to check requirements for every state your load will travel through.
